Softball Recap: Eastern Comes Up Short

Eastern extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping them down to 2-8. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Cherry Hill West Lions. If the Vikings were looking for revenge after losing 7-4 to the Lions when the teams met back in May of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Cherry Hill West, their victory was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-2. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games.

For Cherry Hill West's part, Ella Davis was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off five hits. Davis has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one triple and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Laylah Gomez, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That RBI was her first of the season. Sophia Faltz was another key player, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one run.

Looking ahead, Eastern will be playing in front of their home fans against Sterling at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Silver Knights will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last. As for Cherry Hill West, they will head out to square off against Washington Township at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Minutemen have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.73 runs per game on average), something the Lions will no doubt try to take advantage of.
