On Monday, Shelbyville was able to grind out a solid win over Whiteland, taking the game 10-5. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Golden Bears.
Gracie Crafton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on eight hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Anna Shearer was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three RBI and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Destiney Johnson, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They came up short against Greenfield-Central, falling 13-4.
Mt. Vernon saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ameila Anderson, who went 1-for-4 with one triple and two RBI. Another was AJ Purcell, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Shelbyville's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-7. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games. As for Mt. Vernon, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-10.
Mt. Vernon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Shelbyville has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .473. It's a different story for Mt. Vernon, though, as they've only averaged .325. Will they be able to contain Shelbyville's hitters?
Shelbyville skirted past Mt. Vernon 3-2 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Do the Golden Bears have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Marauders turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
