League recap: Vardian overpowering for Bishop McCort in past week

Laurel Highlands 2 league recap: 5/14/12

Justin Vardian was the best pitcher in Laurel Highlands 2 this week. He won one game and struck out eight batters.

Somerset (15-3, 13-1) is riding a league-best 4-game winning streak. One of those wins came in the past week,. Drew Hemminger's hot bat led the team this week, as he racked up four hits and three RBIs.

The Eagles' pitching staff dominated this week, allowing only five hits and two walks, both of which led the league. Somerset has given up a mere 84 hits on the year in addition to compiling 121 strikeouts. Ian Stiffler is the leader in that category with 30 Ks on the season.

Bishop McCort, the league leader in stolen bases this season with 93, added to its lead in that category with 26 more steals over the past week. Jesse Cooper's 18 steals make him the biggest threat on the basepaths for the Crushers, which is running wild under the direction of manager Chris Pfeil.



The week's strikeout crown belonged to Randy Brewer, who turned in 10 Ks for the Eagles. With 30 strikeouts this year so far, he ranks fourth in the league.

Christian Leech led the league with six hits this week for Bishop McCort. On the season, he's hitting .403 and ranks second in the league with 25 hits.
