Basketball Recap: Speedway Comes Up Short

Speedway and Northview squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Speedway had to settle for second. They were beaten by the Northview Knights 70-40. While losing is never fun, the Sparkplugs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 355th, while the Knights are ranked 43rd).

When it comes to explaining why Speedway lost, don't look at Drew Matelic. Despite the final result, he went 8-for-13 en route to 19 points and five rebounds. Matelic's evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Camden Bennett, who posted four points and five boards.

Brayden Goff continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Northview, shooting 50% from the field on his way to 20 points along with six rebounds and five assists. Another player making a difference was Avery Perry, who went 5-for-10 to rack up 12 points and seven boards.

Speedway has been struggling recently as they've lost 12 of their last 13 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-20 record this season. The win made it two in a row for Northview and bumps their season record up to 24-2.

Speedway does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Northview, they will challenge Indianapolis Crispus Attucks at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Indianapolis Crispus Attucks will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something Northview surely won't give up without a fight.
