Baseball Recap: Serena Comes Up Short

Serena extended their losing streak to six on Friday, dropping their season record down to 5-16 in the process. They came up short against the Yorkville Christian Mustangs, falling 9-1. The Huskers were not able to make up for their loss to the Mustangs from their previous meeting back in April of 2023.

As for Yorkville Christian, they pushed their record up to 14-7 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.

For Yorkville Christian's part, Nolan Hooper spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on one hit and racked up 16 Ks. With that strong performance, Hooper is now averaging an impressive 5.1 strikeouts per game.

On the hitting side, Austin Vugteveen and Tyler Gleason did most of the damage at the plate: Vugteveen went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Gleason went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That double was Gleason's first of the season. Reese Seng was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Coming up, Serena will be playing at home against Sandwich at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Yorkville Christian, they will head out to challenge Heyworth at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
