Softball Recap: Fairmont Has No Trouble Against Springfield

Fairmont won the last time they faced Springfield and things went their way on Friday too. The Firebirds blew past the Wildcats 11-4.

Jaylin Turner spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 15 Ks. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.4 strikeouts per game.

At the plate, Carlee Netherton was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and two stolen bases. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Paige Russell, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Fairmont was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .382. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Springfield only posted a batting average of .167.

Fairmont's record is now 9-6. As for Springfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-10.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Fairmont will head out to take on Beavercreek at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Beavers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.56 runs per game on average), something the Firebirds will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Springfield, they will venture away from home to challenge Northwestern at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Warriors have averaged an impressive 6.4 runs per game this season.
