Softball Recap: Brandeis Takes a Loss

If Brandeis was riding high fresh off their 16-1 takedown of LEE last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Broncos lost 8-2 to the Churchill Chargers on Friday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Chargers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-5 back in March.

Marina Pichardo was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and seven unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Peyton Miers and Reagan Gallegos did some serious damage despite the final result: Miers went 1-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base, while Gallegos went 2-for-3 with one home run. Miers has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.

Brandeis has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Churchill, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-13-1.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Brandeis is set to face off against their familiar foe Clark at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Churchill will square off against rival SA Roosevelt at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
