The Kaneland Knights will take on the Serena Huskers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Kaneland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Kaneland is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Illinois' top teams: Yorkville, who was ranked 11th at the time (Kaneland was ranked tenth). The Knights lost 10-2 to the Foxes on Tuesday. The contest marked the Knights' lowest-scoring match so far this season.
Kaneland saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Addison Coulter, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Those doubles marked the first that Coulter hit this season.
Meanwhile, Serena had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 16.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Timberwolves with a sharp 16-6 victory. The result was nothing new for the Huskers, who have now won four games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Cassie Walsh made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over 5.2 innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2024.
In other batting news, Lanee Cole was a standout: she scored four runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was RayElle Brennan, who went 2-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles, and one stolen base.
Serena kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive matchups.
Having lost for the first time this season, Kaneland fell to 5-1. As for Serena, their win bumped their record up to an identical 5-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Kaneland has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Serena struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
