Recap: Emerson Mavericks vs. Heritage Coyotes
If the Emerson Mavericks were riding high off their 77-55 takedown of the Poteet Pirates last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Emerson was just a bucket shy of victory on Tuesday and fell 83-82 to Heritage. Despite running the score up even higher than they did last Friday (77), Emerson still had to take the loss.
When it comes to explaining why Emerson lost, one person who can't be blamed is Keonte Greybear. Despite the final result, he went 7 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 32 points and 4 assists. Greybear is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Brandon Maxey was another key contributor, scoring 22 points along with eight rebounds.
Even though they lost, Emerson were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Heritage only racked up 23 assists.
Heritage's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cameron Lomax, who scored 23 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds. The contest was Lomax's 20th in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Obi Udom, who scored 15 points along with three steals.
Emerson's loss dropped their record down to 10-8. As for Heritage, they pushed their record up to 11-9 with that win, which was their third straight at home.
Emerson will take on Walnut Grove at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Walnut Grove will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak. As for Heritage, they will head out on the road to face off against Liberty at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Liberty will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 615th, while Heritage is ranked 130th).
