Softball Game Preview: Briar Woods Falcons vs. Lightridge Bolts

For the second straight game, Briar Woods will face off against Lightridge. The Falcons will look to defend their home field on Thursday against the Bolts at 6:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Briar Woods 2.8, Lightridge 1.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Tuesday just wasn't the day for Briar Woods' offense. They came up short against Lightridge on Tuesday, falling 6-0. The matchup marked the first time this year in which the Falcons were not able to get on the board.

For Lightridge's part, not much got past Peyton Robinson, who gave up just three hits and racked up 14 Ks to keep Briar Woods off the board. Robinson has been consistent: she hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Lightridge saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lexi Musick, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. That stolen base was Musick's first of the season. Another was Tiffany VanGinkel, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

The win keeps Lightridge at an undefeated 12-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average this season. As for Briar Woods, their defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 9-4.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Briar Woods has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 13.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Lightridge struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10.7 strikeouts.
