Yough is preparing for their first conference matchup of the season on Monday. They are taking a road trip to challenge the Mt. Pleasant Vikings at 4:00 p.m. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Yough has struggled recently with four defeats in a row, while Mt. Pleasant will arrive with three straight wins.
Yough is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They took an 8-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of Deer Lakes on Saturday. That's two games in a row now that the Cougars have lost by exactly three runs.
Shiann Kaefer made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double. That double marked the first that she hit this season. Leah Boris was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Mt. Pleasant was not the first on the board last Friday, but they got there more often. They had just enough and edged out Southmoreland 12-11. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Vikings have posted since May 2, 2024.
Danica Trainer 2027 made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and seven unearned) runs off 13 hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Kendra Brunson 2027 and Carly Surma 2026 did most of the damage at the plate: Brunson 2027 went 3-for-5 with one home run and four RBI, while Surma 2026 scored two runs while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Alakson 2025, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
Mt. Pleasant was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .412. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.
Mt. Pleasant's record now sits at 5-3. As for Yough, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.
Yough was able to grind out a solid win over Mt. Pleasant when the teams last played back in May of 2024, winning 11-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
