Basketball Recap: Overton Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Kierra Baldwin and Nia Smith

It was a good run, but Overton unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Wednesday. The game between the Overton Wolverines and the Whitehaven Tigers didn't end well, with the Overton Wolverines falling 43-28. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, with their most recent defeat being a 56-31 loss back in January.

Overton's loss came despite strong showings from Nia Smith and Kierra Baldwin. Smith posted eight points and eight boards, while Baldwin scored eight points along with five rebounds and four steals. Smith is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in each of the last eight games she's played.

Whitehaven can attribute much of their success to Taniyah Hurt, who had nine points in addition to six assists and six steals. That's the most assists Hurt has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Laila Nelson, who earned nine points.

Overton's loss dropped their record down to 17-8. As for Whitehaven, they have been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 12 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season.

Overton wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 63-55 defeat against Houston on the 28th. As for Whitehaven, they have also already played their next game, a 59-27 win against Arlington on the 28th.
