Basketball Game Preview: Canyon Springs Cougars vs. El Segundo Eagles

The Canyon Springs Cougars and the El Segundo Eagles will compete for holiday cheer at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Canyon Springs knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past ten contests -- so hopefully El Segundo likes a good challenge.

Last Thursday, Canyon Springs blew past Heritage, posting a 65-38 win. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 464th, while the Patriots are ranked 1128th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Canyon Springs' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tyler Vann led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kayden Mims, who went 7 of 13 on his way to 14 points and four steals.

Canyon Springs smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in ten consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, El Segundo was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took a 59-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of Palos Verdes.

Canyon Springs is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.0 points per game. As for El Segundo, their loss dropped their record down to 3-10.
