Basketball Recap: Fuquay - Varina Comes Up Short

Fuquay - Varina was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They came up short against the South Garner Titans, falling 58-33. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Titans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 69-28 last Wednesday.

Despite the defeat, Fuquay - Varina saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Abigail Meaney en route to 16 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Meaney has been hot, having posted three or more steals the last seven times she's played.

Even though they lost, Fuquay - Varina smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

South Garner found their leader in sophomore Kimaya Barnes, who to rack up 13 points in addition to eight steals and six assists. What's more, Barnes also posted a 60% field goal percentage, which is the highest she's achieved since back in December of 2023. Chloe Crawford was another key player, putting up ten points and four steals.

Fuquay - Varina's loss dropped their record down to 5-19. As for South Garner, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 14 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season.

Fuquay - Varina wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 61-28 defeat against Southeast Raleigh on the 17th. As for South Garner, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 90-40 victory against Garner on the 17th.
