Preview: Ayden - Grifton Chargers vs. SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars
The Ayden - Grifton Chargers will be playing in front of their home fans against the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Ayden - Grifton has now lost 13 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 19.
On Tuesday, Ayden - Grifton was beaten by North Pitt 74-17. While losing is never fun, Ayden - Grifton can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 546th, while North Pitt is ranked 13th).
Meanwhile, after soaring to 62 points the game before, SouthWest Edgecombe were a bit more limited in their contest on Friday. They had to suffer through a rough 71-23 loss at the hands of North Pitt. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points SouthWest Edgecombe has scored all season.
Despite the loss, SouthWest Edgecombe saw an underclassman step up: Kd Collins scored 15 points along with five rebounds. That was a full 65.2% of SouthWest Edgecombe's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, SouthWest Edgecombe struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Ayden - Grifton has been struggling recently as they've lost 14 of their last 15 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-20 record this season. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, their loss dropped their record down to 15-5.
Ayden - Grifton was taken down by SouthWest Edgecombe 58-23 in their previous matchup back in January. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Collins, who scored 18 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Now that Ayden - Grifton knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
