Basketball Recap: Covington Piles Up the Points Against Morgan

Covington hadn't done well against Morgan recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Covington Owls took their matchup with ease, bagging a 57-18 win over the Morgan Eagles. The Owls have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 20 points or more this season.

It was another big night for Jeremiah Cunningham, who went 6 of 12 en route to 14 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. That's the most steals he has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Ivan Mendez, who almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine boards.

Covington smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 19 offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Covington has been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.8 points per game. As for Morgan, they dropped their record down to 1-7 with the loss, which was their third straight at home.

When Covington and Morgan next hit the court, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. Covington will try to stop Avalon's four-game winning streak when the meet at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Morgan will try to stop Bynum's three-game winning streak when the meet at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
