Foothill's hitters are going to have their work cut out for them on Tuesday: Las Plumas hadn't allowed a single run the last five times they've hit the field. The team relied heavily on Kendal Headley, who fired off two home runs, nine RBI, and four runs while going 5-for-5. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Atteberry, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Las Plumas was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .579. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, it's playoff time, and Foothill had no trouble coming through when it counted. They were the clear victors by a 7-0 margin over Red Bluff on Friday.
Elisea Wiegand was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 15 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one triple and one run.
In other batting news, Taylor Bates was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Malia Webb, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Foothill has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-5-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Las Plumas, their win bumped their record up to 24-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Las Plumas has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Foothill struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 10.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Las Plumas' way against Foothill when the teams last played back in March, as Las Plumas made off with a 10-1 victory. Do the Thunderbirds have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
