League recap: Gorton win leads to rise in state rank

Gorton moved up to 498 from 533 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Section 1 A - 2. The Wolves climbed the ranks as a result of a 43-14 win over Peekskill.

Somers extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Ossining, 33-22. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.

Stefano Bicknese was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 18 carries, he ran for 193 yards as Somers topped Ossining. Teammate Joseph Lombardo added to the ground attack by rushing for 92 yards.

Festo was the best wideout in Section 1 A - 2 this week as Tony Dematteo's team bested Dan Ricci's team. Festo racked up six receptions for 114 yards. Pete Mueller helped Somers' passing attack out by catching one ball for 17 yards.

Nick Mariano put up the best numbers through the air as Yorktown beat Lakeland. He finished with a total of nine completions for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Mariano's favorite target this week was Eric Meyreles, who caught two passes for 75 yards.

6-foot-0 quarterback Mariano of the Huskers is the league leader in passing yards this season with 611. He has also thrown eight touchdowns. On the ground, the Tuskers' Bicknese has rushed for 752 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Festo. The Somers star has 18 catches for 286 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Spring Valley takes on Saunders Trades & Tech. As it stands, the Tigers are in seventh, while the Blue Devils are in third.

Brewster and Eastchester played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Brewster eventually emerging with a 21-20 victory.
