Baseball Recap: Southwestern Find Success

Southwestern came out on top against Vandalia on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run sixth inning. The Piasa Birds took their game against the Vandals 8-4. The Piasa Birds haven't had any issues with the Vandals recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.

Ian Brantley made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over 6.2 innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Southwestern is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 7-15 otherwise. Brantley was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in March.

Brantley wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Reed Campbell, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double. That's the most hits Campbell has posted over his last eight contests.

Southwestern's record now sits at 9-16. As for Vandalia, their loss dropped their record down to 8-13.

Looking ahead, Southwestern is taking a road trip to take on North Greene at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Vandalia, they will be playing at home against Litchfield at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The last four games the Purple Panthers have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
