Softball Game Preview: West Point Dragons vs. Apollo Hawks

The West Point Dragons will square off against the Apollo Hawks at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (West Point has four straight victories, Apollo has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

West Point had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 17-run drubbing they dealt Apollo on Tuesday. The Dragons were the clear victors by a 22-5 margin over the Hawks. Considering the Dragons have won eight games by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Leilani Mendez was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with six stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Audrina Paschke was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four stolen bases and four runs.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: West Point kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in six consecutive contests.

West Point's win bumped their record up to 12-5. As for Apollo, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-6.

Apollo's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: West Point hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .443.
