Head coach: Jerome Williams
Ranked No. 2 in the country by MaxPreps to start the season, Findlay Prep is playing with its third head coach in three seasons in Jerome Williams. He inherits a group that finished the 2012-13 season ranked No. 3 in the MaxPreps Academy Top 10. The Pilots have three of the nation's top seniors in
Rashad Vaughn (6-foot-6, G),
Kelly Oubre (6-6, G), and
Craig Victor (6-7, F). Oubre has already committed to play at Kansas next season while Victor has committed to Arizona.
2. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas)2012-13 finish: 29-3 Division I state champions
Head coach: Grant Rice
If not for Findlay Prep, the Gaels would be the overwhelming choice to be the No. 1 team in the state. Of course Bishop Gorman will have a chance to rectify that situation on Jan. 25 when it meets Findlay Prep at the Big City Showcase. Bishop Gorman is a relatively young team, with six juniors and a sophomore expected to contribute heavily. The Gaels have plenty of size underneath with 6-11 all-state junior
Stephen Zimmerman and 6-9 junior
Chase Jeter returning. Guard play is also strong with returning seniors
Noah Robotham (5-10) and
Obim Okeke (6-1).
3. Centennial (Las Vegas)2012-13 finish: 23-10
Head coach: Todd Allen
Centennial loses its two leading scorers from last year in Marcus and Malcolm Allen. The duo combined for 50 points a game during a 23-win season for the Bulldogs. However three other starters return, including 6-6 senior
Eddie Davis, 6-5 junior
Marcus Berkley and 5-11 senior
Khalil Thompson. Centennial played Bishop Gorman close three times, including an 80-78 defeat, before falling by 26 points in the playoffs.
4. Clark (Las Vegas)2012-13 finish: 29-3
Head coach: Chad Beeten
Eight of Clark's top 10 scorers from last year's team return, including 6-6 senior
Diontae Jones and 6-5 senior
Sherron Wilson. Jones averaged 12.2 points per game for Clark while Wilson averaged just less than nine. Jones is also the team's top returning rebounder.
5. Foothill (Henderson)2012-13 finish: 22-6
Head coach: Kevin Soares
The Falcons return their top scorer from last year in all-leaguer
Austin Starr along with steady contributors
Jalen Shepard and
Matt Rapp. Starr averaged 13.8 points per game last year while Shepard, an all-league player last year, and Rapp each averaged 5.5 points. Soares, the coach of the year in the Southeast League, will have to replace league MVP Elijah Smith along with all-league honoree Chris Echols.
