Basketball Recap: Sahuaro Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Sahuaro had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 37.5 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Wednesday. They walked away with a 45-35 victory over the Sabino Sabercats. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Cougars also won the last time the pair played back in November of 2023.

Sahuaro's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Carly Coolidge, who posted 11 points and eight boards. Another player making a difference was Maggie Boyd, who put up seven points and five rebounds.

Sahuaro smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in eight consecutive contests.

Several Sabercats players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jayda Haley, who had 17 points in addition to five rebounds and five steals. That was a full 48.6% of Sabino's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Chayil Combs, who put up 12 points.

Sahuaro pushed their record up to 8-5 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 24.3 points per game. As for Sabino, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-5.

A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Sahuaro Cougars face off against the Desert View Jaguars at 9:00 a.m. on December 27th. After both having extra time off, Sabino and Yuma Catholic will dust off their jerseys to take on one another at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
