Softball Game Preview: Newport Cubs vs. Cascade Cougars

Newport hasn't had much luck against Cascade recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Cubs are taking a road trip to square off against the Cougars at 5:00 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.

Newport is headed into Monday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their seventh straight game on Thursday. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 9-8 heartbreaker at the hands of Philomath.

Emry Belloni made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ivy Ruddiman, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one stolen base.

Meanwhile, Cascade has relied on a stalwart pitchers averaging four runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Thursday. They came up short against Stayton, falling 14-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Cougars have suffered since May 9, 2024.

Malia Scanlan was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. Amyah Miranda was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Newport's loss dropped their record down to 3-14. As for Cascade, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 18-1.

Newport suffered a grim 14-3 defeat to Cascade when the teams last played last Wednesday. Can the Cubs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
