Baseball Game Preview: St. Xavier Tigers vs. Frederick Douglass Broncos

The St. Xavier Tigers will head out on the road to challenge the Frederick Douglass Broncos at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. St. Xavier's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so Frederick Douglass' hitters will have their work cut out for them.

St. Xavier's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. They were the clear victors by a 6-0 margin over Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Cooper Mattingly tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kyle Krupp, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in runs (two). Brodie Benefield also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Frederick Douglass). They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 victory over Lexington Catholic on Monday. The Broncos haven't had any issues with the Knights recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

St. Xavier's record now sits at 3-1. As for Frederick Douglass, their record now sits at 2-3.

St. Xavier beat Frederick Douglass 7-4 when the teams last played back in April of 2023. Will St. Xavier repeat their success, or does Frederick Douglass has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
