Rockhurst quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase threw for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and ran for another 92 yards to lead the Class 6 top-ranked Hawklets to a 28-21 win over Kansas’ Class 5A top-ranked Hutchinson, in the Show Me state’s most intriguing week two battle.

But the most impressive aerial assault by any one athlete came at the hands of Raymore-Peculiar signal caller Cameron Coffman. The sophomore sensation completed 18 of 21 passes for 533 yards and five touchdowns in a 60-41 win over Class 6 No. 8 Liberty.

Seven completions fell safely into the hands of senior receiver Gavin Lutman, who scored four touchdowns and totaled 239 receiving yards. Coffman also hooked up with senior receiver Mark Sappington three times for 119 yards and a score.

Liberty’s Jimmy Smelcer didn’t match Coffman in yardage, but he did connect with Bluejay receivers for 287 yards and five touchdowns of his own, on 19 of 31 passing, in the high scoring affair against the then Class 5 eighth-ranked Panthers.

Sixth-ranked Blue Springs South bounced back from a 42-14 national television loss to Rockhurst largely due to the arm of Blaine Dalton.

The senior quarterback led the Jaguars to a 35-34 overtime win over sixth-ranked Park Hill by completing 23 of 42 passes for 260 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Michael Vann caught nine of those aerials for 124 yards.

Park Hill opted to go with a balanced attack during the narrow loss.

Trojan quarterback Erik Johanson completed 10 of 25 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown, while running back Sam Pour rushed for 168 yards on 19 carries and scored twice.

Oak Park quarterback Kevin McConnell was perfect in leading the Northmen to a 30-12 win over then seventh-ranked Belton by completing all 16 of his pass attempts for 256 yards and four scores.

Ryan Humes and his West Platte teammates would rather have a win after going head-to-head with Class 2’s top-ranked Lawson. But the quarterback did his part in trying to secure an upset over the Cardinals.

Humes completed 15 of 25 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown in the 47-21 loss. Ben Schlick caught four Humes passes for 133 yards in the contest.

In other games matching ranked teams, Class 4 No. 2 Kearney edged then Class 5 fourth ranked Fort Osage 17-7 and Class 1 No. 2 Thayer squeaked by then Class 3 No. 4 Mountain Grove 21-13.
