Baseball Recap: New Washington Takes a Loss

New Washington extended their losing streak to five on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-8 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 9-7 heartbreaker at the hands of the Henryville Hornets. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

As for Henryville, their record now sits at 4-8. With that win, they brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.

For Henryville's part, Jack Bridges was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Bridges is becoming a predictor of Henryville's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 2-7 when he doesn't). Bridges was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Wyatt Owens, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one stolen base. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Dylan O'Bannon, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

Looking ahead, New Washington will challenge Austin at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Henryville, they will take on Rock Creek Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lions have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.67 runs per game on average), something the Hornets will no doubt try to take advantage of.
