Volleyball Recap: East Chapel Hill Takes a Loss

If East Chapel Hill was riding high fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Southern School of Energy and Sustainability on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Wildcats fell just short of the Durham Academy Cavaliers by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cavaliers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in August of 2023.

East Chapel Hill wouldn't go down easily and took Durham Academy into a fifth set but they suffered a heartbreaking ten-point loss. The match finished with set scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 15-5.

Durham Academy found their leader in freshman Alice Chen, who had 19 digs and two assists. Chen has been hot for a while, having posted ten or more digs the last nine times she's played. Naomi Adigun also deserves some recognition as she had her first block of the season.

With the defeat, East Chapel Hill broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 7-6. As for Durham Academy, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 9-4.

East Chapel Hill and Durham Academy should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. The Wildcats will challenge Hillside at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank advantage (103 vs. 572). Meanwhile, Durham Academy (ranked 64th) will meet St. Mary's (ranked 290th) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
