Softball Preview: Yutan-Mead Patriots vs. Fort Calhoun Pioneers

Yutan-Mead and Fort Calhoun are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2015, but likely not for long. The Yutan-Mead Patriots will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against the Fort Calhoun Pioneers at 6:30 p.m. The last three games Yutan-Mead has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

On Saturday, it was close, but Yutan-Mead sidestepped Milford for a 12-11 victory. That's two games straight that the Patriots have won by just one run.

The team relied heavily on Jenna Trent, who went 4-for-4 with three RBI and a double. The team also got some help courtesy of Adie Gale, who scored three runs while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, after a string of seven wins, Fort Calhoun's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell just short of Nebraska City by a score of 11-10.

Anna Taylor was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in August. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Addison Benoit was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Emily Warfield, who went 1-for-1 with a home run and two RBI.

Even though they lost, Fort Calhoun didn't let batters stay on the plate for long and finished the game with eight strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Nebraska City only tossed five.

Yutan-Mead has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-5 record this season. As for Fort Calhoun, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-4.

Yutan-Mead might still be hurting after the 11-1 loss they got from Fort Calhoun in their previous meeting back in September of 2023. Can Yutan-Mead avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
