Preview: Pasco Pirates vs. Weeki Wachee Hornets
Pasco is on a three-game streak of home losses, Weeki Wachee a five-game streak of away losses, but someone's luck is about to change. The Pasco Pirates will take on the Weeki Wachee Hornets at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Pasco comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 22 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
Pasco suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Friday. They had to suffer through a rough 61-21 loss at the hands of Zephyrhills. While losing is never fun, Pasco can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 640th, while Zephyrhills is ranked 317th).
The losing side was boosted by Mason Pippin, who scored three points.
Meanwhile, Weeki Wachee pushed their score all the way to 60 on Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 79-60 bruising from Central.
Despite the defeat, Weeki Wachee had strong showings from Donnie Becude, who scored 16 points, and Jean Garcia, who scored 21 points along with three steals. That's the first time this season that Becude scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaac Priester, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Even though they lost, Weeki Wachee were working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Pasco's loss dropped their record down to 4-11. As for Weeki Wachee, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-14 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Pasco have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 23 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Weeki Wachee, though, as they've been averaging only 28.7 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
