Baseball Recap: Handley Comes Up Short

After flying high against Piedmont last Wednesday, Handley came back down to earth. The Handley Tigers fell just short of the Beulah Bobcats by a score of 7-5 on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Tigers have suffered since April 19, 2024.

Kaleb Powel was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.

On the hitting side, Zae Dunson was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Alex Busbin also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Handley moved to 9-4 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 11.33 hits in those games compared to only five in the others. As for Beulah, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season.

A feisty cat fight will be fought as Handley Tigers take on Woodland Bobcats at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Beulah, they will take on Saint James at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Saint James' pitching crew has only allowed 4.1 runs per game this season, so Beulah's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
