Baseball Recap: Columbus Has No Trouble Against Southwest

Columbus barely beat Southwest the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Columbus Explorers put the hurt on the Southwest Eagles with a sharp 8-2 victory on Thursday. The Explorers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by six runs or more this season.

Samuel Alonso looked comfortable as he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jose Correa, who scored a run and stole five bases while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in stolen bases. The team also got some help courtesy of Jason Garcia, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.

Columbus pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 12.33 hits in those games compared to only 5.33 in the others. As for Southwest, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Columbus will challenge West Boca Raton at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. West Boca Raton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season. As for Southwest, they will square off against St. Brendan at 6:00 p.m. on March 6th.
