Softball Game Preview: Wheeling Wildcats vs. Maine East Blue Demons

The Wheeling Wildcats will face off against the Maine East Blue Demons at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Maine East took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Wheeling, who comes in off a win.

Wheeling is headed out in good spirits considering the team just ended their winless streak on the road against Waukegan on Thursday. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 23-3 victory.

Sierra Kuhlman made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Kuhlman was also big at the plate, scoring four runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, Wheeling got a massive performance out of Alaina Costello, who scored five runs while going 4-for-5. Another player making a difference was Viansa Pollina, who scored three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Wheeling always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .619. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Waukegan only posted an OBP of .400.

Meanwhile, Maine East fell victim to Rolling Meadows and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They lost 13-0 to the Mustangs. The Blue Demons haven't had much luck with the Mustangs recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.

Maine East now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Wheeling, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.

Wheeling couldn't quite get it done against Maine East when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 12-7. Can the Wildcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
