The senior quarterback starts the 2021 season with a bang, throwing for 647 yards and seven touchdowns leading Gauchos to wild 49-35 victory over Maria Carrillo.

Jacob Porteous made an auspicious senior debut for Casa Grande (Petaluma, Calif.) on Friday night. It turned out to be a landmark record breaker.

The 6-foot-4, 170-pound quarterback completed 29-of-52 passes for 647 yards and seven touchdowns in a 49-35 win at Maria Carrillo (Santa Rosa). According to the MaxPreps national record book and Cal-Hi Sports record book, that is the fifth highest single-game yardage total in California history and a new North Coast Section and Bay Area mark.

St. Bernard's (Eureka, Calif.) quarterback Noah Davis had the previous NCS mark of 614 in 2014. The old Bay Area record, according to the Cal-Hi Sports record book, was 582 set by Sean Mannion of Foothill (Pleasanton) in 2009.

The national record is 837 yards passing by Will Grier of Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.) and the state mark is 764 set by David Koral of Palisades (Pacific Palisades) in 2000.

Porteous, who played his freshman and sophomore seasons at St. Vincent, had three big targets throughout the game, Marcus Scott (11 catches, 191 yards), Shane Runyeon (7, 204) and Caden Cramer (7, 179) who all caught two touchdowns. Spencer Almond also hauled in a 29-yard scoring pass from Porteous.

The other state marks ahead of Porteous are Jorge Amaya, of Hawkins (Los Angeles), 739 yards in 2014; Jake Brown of Folsom, 689 in 2012; and EJ Kreutzmann, of La Jolla Country Day, 663 in 2019.

Among other great quarterbacks to play high school football in the San Francisco Bay Area are Tom Brady of Serra (San Mateo), Dan Fouts of St. Ignatius (San Francisco), Jim Plunkett of James Lick (San Jose), Norm Van Brocklin of Acalanes (Lafayette), Dan Pastorini of Bellarmine, John Brodie of Oakland Tech and Jared Goff of Marin Catholic (Kenfield).

In the spring season, Porteous played four games and completed 55 of 89 passes for 748 yards and nine touchdowns. He almost matched those marks on Friday night.

It's doubtful Jacob Porteous had an inclining before the game he would break a North Coast Section passing record.
