Preview: Sweetwater Red Devils vs. Olympian Eagles
Sweetwater has enjoyed a four-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against The Olympian Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Last Thursday, Sweetwater took their matchup at home with ease, bagging a 55-20 win over Montgomery. The contest was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Sweetwater had established a 34 point advantage.
Sweetwater's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Xzavier Crews, who rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries. Crews is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last five games he's played. Carlos David Delgado was in the mix too, providing Sweetwater with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, everything went Olympian's way against Hilltop on Friday as Olympian made off with a 36-14 win.
Jake Marcial was the offensive standout of the contest as he picked up 69 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Coby Dunn, who rushed for 137 yards while picking up 7.2 yards per carry.
Their wins bumped Sweetwater to 3-5 and Olympian to 4-4.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's matchup: Sweetwater has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 323.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Olympian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 149.1 per game. It's looking like Friday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Sweetwater couldn't quite finish off Olympian in their previous meeting back in October of 2022 and fell 28-25. Thankfully for Sweetwater, Matthew Pentland (who threw for 196 yards and four touchdowns) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
