Baseball Recap: Red Bud Starts Season with Win at Home

Red Bud gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Tuesday. They were the clear victor by a 17-1 margin over the Valmeyer Pirates. This was payback for the Musketeers, who suffered a 10-7 loss the last time these two teams met.

Derrick Whelan made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lucas Schwartzkopf, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in RBI. Another player making a difference was Trent Sternberg, who scored two runs.

Red Bud always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Valmeyer only posted an OBP of .385.

Valmeyer's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2.

Coming up, Red Bud will head out on the road to face off against Nashville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Valmeyer, they will face off against Marquette at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
