Basketball Preview: Leigh Longhorns vs. Wilcox Chargers
Leigh has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Wilcox Chargers at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Leigh only won by two when they last took the court, which might have inspired the 21-point they dealt the 76ers on Friday. Leigh put the hurt on the 76ers with a sharp 74-53 win. Given Leigh's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 303rd, while the 76ers are ranked 947th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Caleb Asante was his usual excellent self, scoring 14 points along with five rebounds and three steals. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Cooper Smith, who scored eight points along with five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Wilcox's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight defeat. They took a 76-67 hit to the loss column at the hands of Los Gatos. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Wilcox in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now lost five in a row.
Leigh pushed their record up to 13-7 with that victory, which was their third straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.0 points per game. As for Wilcox, their loss dropped their record down to 8-12.
