Softball Preview: Kennedy Commanders vs. Jefferson Academy Jaguars
The Kennedy Commanders will venture away from home to challenge the Jefferson Academy Jaguars at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.
While Commanders fans will have to keep waiting for their team to come home, they shouldn't be too worried about the road trip considering the result of Thursday's season opener. Everything went their way against Aurora Central two weeks ago as Kennedy made off with a 14-3 win. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory the Commanders have posted since August 31, 2023.
Genesis Lujan was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Lujan was even better at the plate, scoring four runs and stealing a base while going 4-for-4.
In other batting news, Alexiah Lunas was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Aleeyah Garcia, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Kennedy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Aurora Central only posted a batting average of .227.
Meanwhile, Jefferson Academy was not the first on the board last Saturday, but they got there more often. They put the hurt on Englewood with a sharp 20-10 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Jaguars.
Jefferson Academy got a massive performance out of Hayley Smith, who went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ellie Arnold, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 4-for-5.
