Softball Recap: Mt. Vernon Find Success

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Mt. Vernon ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They skirted past the Waltonville Spartans 10-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Rams have posted since April 24, 2024.

Taylor DeSmith made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. DeSmith was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. That stolen base marked the first that she snagged this season.

In other batting news, Allie Sweeten was excellent, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Another player making a difference was Lexi Howard, who scored two runs while going 2-for-5.

The victory made it two in a row for Mt. Vernon and bumps their season record up to 3-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games. As for Waltonville, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mt. Vernon will take on Carmi-White County at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Waltonville, they will face off against Herrin at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
