Basketball Recap: Mingo Central Starts Season with Victory at Home

Mingo Central gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Tuesday. They snuck past the Phelps Hornets with a 68-62 victory. That's more bragging rights for the Miners, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Devin Maynard was nothing short of spectacular: he went 6 for 13 on his way to 24 points. Logan Barker was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Mingo Central was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2023.

Despite the defeat, Phelps saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Tyler Weddington dropped a double-double on 27 points and 21 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Jahmar Stewart, who posted 14 points.

Phelps' loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Mingo Central didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 62-60 win against Tolsia on the 13th. As for Phelps, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 75-71 victory against Wesley Christian on the 12th.
