Holmes County Central faced Kosciusko in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Jaguars narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Whippets 70-67. Winning may never get old, but the Jaguars sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.

Holmes County Central's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Devante Simpson led the charge by almost dropping a double-double with 13 points and nine assists. Those nine assists gave Simpson a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Damarian Harris, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and ten boards.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Holmes County Central was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.2 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 9.2.

Kosciusko's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cory Guyton Jr, who shot 47% from the field en route to 29 points. The matchup was Guyton Jr's eighth in a row with at least 20 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Josh Cole, who dropped a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Holmes County Central's win bumped their record up to 9-2. As for Kosciusko, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 7-1.

Holmes County Central wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 57-40 victory against Greenwood on the 9th. As for Kosciusko, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 100-65 win against Newton County on the 9th.
