Preview: Simeon Wolverines vs. Kelly Trojans
After four games on the road, Simeon is heading back home. They will take on the Kelly Trojans at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Simeon won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Wednesday. They were beaten by Hyde Park 69-36. Simeon was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 65-30.
Despite their loss, Simeon saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Janiya Pillow, who scored 11 points along with two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Pillow is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabryelle Howard, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Simeon struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Hyde Park racked up 17 assists.
Meanwhile, Kelly unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Wednesday. They had to suffer through a rough 77-5 loss at the hands of Phillips. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Kelly has scored all season.
Luz Escudero was Kelly's leading scorer, having posted three points.
Simeon now has a losing record at 6-7. As for Kelly, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6.
Wednesday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy contest: Simeon have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 22.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Kelly struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 25.8 rebounds per game. Given Simeon's sizeable advantage in that area, Kelly will need to find a way to close that gap.
Everything came up roses for Simeon against Kelly in their previous matchup back in January of 2023 as the squad secured a 68-21 win. Does Simeon have another victory up their sleeve, or will Kelly turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
