East Grand Rapids senior and Michigan commit named Miss Basketball.
Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school girls basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Macy Brown of
East Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Michigan High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The 6-foot senior guard led the Pioneers to a 15-9 mark and the Division 1 District 12 semifinals.
For the season, Brown averaged 25.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. She is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,537 points, passing her sister Jillian – now a sophomore at Northwestern – earlier this season.
The University of Michigan commit was recently named the Mick McCade Miss Basketball award winner, given annually to the state's top senior. Brown has been an all-conference player in each of her four seasons and earned all-state honors as a junior.
Ruby Whitehorn of
Edison Academy (Detroit) was the 2021-22 MaxPreps Michigan Player of the Year. Now a freshman at Clemson, Whitehorn averaged 24.3 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.9 assists a game for the Michigan Division 2 champions.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in April. Past selections include 2022 WNBA Most Valuable Player A'ja Wilson (2014) as well as 2022 All-WNBA picks Skylar Diggins-Smith (2009), Sabrina Ionescu (2016), Jonquel Jones (2012), Nneka Ogwumike (2008), Kelsey Plum (2013), Breanna Stewart (2012) and Alyssa Thomas (2010).
