MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Girls Lacrosse Rankings

St. Stephen's & St. Agnes avenged its first loss in Independent School League Class AA action in 17 years in a big way.

Carly Reed scored six goals while Michele Phillips and Layne Voorhees tallied four times each as the 13th-ranked Saints blitzed Georgetown Visitation, 18-6, in the championship game on Wednesday. SS&SA has won every league title since 1995 (some years it was not played).

Georgetown Visitation (20-2) had defeated the Saints, 12-11, in overtime on April 18, breaking a win streak in the league that also dated back to that 1995 season. But in last week's game, the Saints were ready, scoring three times before the Cubs could gain possession. The Saints led 12-4 at halftime.

"We knew what we had to do; we watched video and practiced to defend their cutters," said Saints veteran coach Kathy Jenkins, who recently went over the 600-win mark in her illustrious career. "On offense we cut away from the goal in the first game against them. We saw our mistakes.



"This time we went out and played beautifully. The girls are so athletic and when we play as a team we are hard to stop."

In the ISL A final, Olivia Lee scored with 26 seconds left to give Holton-Arms a 6-5 victory over National Cathedral.

St. Anthony's claims CHSAA title
St. Anthony's earned a fifth-straight New York Catholic High School state championship by downing Sacred Heart, 19-12, on Monday. The offense was led by Annie Heagerty (four goals, two assists), Darcy Messina (four goals, one assist) and Maggie Bill (four goals).

Sacred Heart (16-4) stayed even with the Friars through most of the first half and trailed 9-7 at halftime. St. Anthony's immediately took control in the start of the second half.

"It's an awesome feeling and I couldn't be any happier right now," said senior attack Messina, whose Friars finished 16-1. "Sacred Heart is amazing; they always come out strong so they had great momentum at the start of the game.

"After halftime we came around and we just brought it out. Chrissy Schreiber and I were a part of four of the five championships so it is a huge honor and it is amazing to be a part of this program and I can't wait to leave it behind for the younger girls."



Moorestown's Deanna Knobloch is winningest coach in N.J. history
She is never one to brag about accomplishments, but Moorestown (N.J.) coach Deanna Knobloch has earned another major milestone. Earlier this year she reached 400 wins and recently she became the winningest girls lacrosse coach in state history. She now is 420-29-4 and her team is ranked No. 2 at 21-0 as it gears for the third round of the state tournament.

1. (No. 1 last week) McDonogh (Owings Mills, Md.), 18-0
The Eagles capped another perfect season – their third in a row – and won their 69th-straight game by downing Maryvale Prep, 12-11, to claim their fourth straight IAAM Division A championship.

2. (2) Moorestown (N.J.), 21-0
The Quakers play Notre Dame in the third round of the state tournament in Section III. They coasted to playoff wins over Jackson, 20-0, and Kingsway, 19-2. The first win helped coach Deanna Knobloch become the all-time winningest coach in New Jersey girls lacrosse history (now 420 victories). Overall, she is an amazing 420-29-4 in 21 seasons.

3. (3) Bryn Mawr (Baltimore), 16-2
The Mawrtians were eliminated by Maryvale Prep in the semifinals of the IAAM tournament. They finished second in the regular season and boasted impressive wins over St. Anthony's (15-7) and Garden City (8-3) in the Maryland-New York Challenge.

4. (4) St. Anthony's (Melville, N.Y.), 16-1
The Friars claimed their fifth-straight CHSAA championship Monday by toppling Sacred Heart, 19-12, as Annie Heagerty (four goals, two assists), Darcy Messina (four goals, one assist) and Maggie Bill (four goals) led the way.

5. (6) Century (Sykesville, Md.), 17-1
The Knights claimed a 10-8 victory over C.W. Wright in the semifinals of the 3A/2A state tournament and meet Queen Anne's in the championship game Tuesday at 4 p.m. at UMBC.



6. (7) Farmingdale (N.Y.), 15-1
The Dalers opened Nassau County playoff action Wednesday by routing East Meadow, 20-2. They play Oceanside Tuesday in the semifinals at Adelphi at 6 p.m.

7. (8) Maryvale Prep (Brooklandville, Md.), 13-4
The Lions reached the finals of the IAAM A Conference tournament where they gave McDonogh all it could handle in a 12-11 loss. They also scored a memorable 9-7 victory over No. 2 seeded Bryn Mawr in the semifinals. They won eight straight games until bowing to McDonogh.

8. (10) Ridgewood (N.J.), 19-2
The Maroons cruised in two games in the Group IV tournament and host South Brunswick on Tuesday in the third round.

9. (11) West Genesee (Camillus, N.Y.), 13-1
The Lady Cats enter sectional play this week as the top seed in Section Three. WG will face the winner of Cicero North-Syracuse vs. Fayetteville-Manlius on Thursday.

10. (12) Chatham (N.J.), 19-2
The Cougars coasted in the first two state playoff games and face West Essex in the third round on Tuesday.

11. (13) Vero Beach (Fla.), 21-2
The Fighting Indians won their seventh-straight state title and extended their win streak over Florida opponents to 93 games with a 22-6 rout of Bishop Moore in the FHSAA final.



12. (19) St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (Alexandria, Va.), 27-3
The Saints capped the year with two championships, first winning the Independent School League crown with an 18-6 rout of Georgetown Visitation and then sweeping three games to claim the Virginia State Independent Tournament, capped by a 16-5 win over Bishop Ireton Saturday at Old Dominion.

13. (15) Guilderland (Guilderland Center, N.Y.), 16-0
The Flying Dutch finished their regular season undefeated with a 14-2 victory over Bethlehem (N.Y.). They play in the Class A quarterfinals Tuesday vs. Colonie.

14. (17) Ward Melville (East Setauket, N.Y.), 16-1
The Patriots defeated Middle Country, 17-9, in the Suffolk County tournament Monday in the Class A quarterfinals and will host East Islip Wednesday in the semifinals at 4 p.m.

15. (18) Bay Shore (N.Y.), 16-1
The Marauders downed Sachem East, 17-7, Monday in the Suffolk County Class A quarterfinals.

16. (20) Garnet Valley (Glen Mills, Pa.), 20-1
The Jaguars advanced to the semifinals of the District 1 tournament, defeating Strath Haven, 16-6, as Halley Barnes had four goals and two assists and Annaelise Morello collected three goals and four assists. The Jags play fellow Central League rival Radnor in the semifinals Tuesday at Henderson at 7 p.m.

17. (14) Georgetown Visitation Prep (Washington, D.C.), 20-2
The Tigers fell to St. Stephen's & St. Agnes, 18-6, in the finals of the Independent School League championship.
 
18. (21) Hauppauge (N.Y.), 15-2
Taylor Ranftle had five goals and five assists for No. 1 Hauppauge in a 15-7 win over Miller Place in the Suffolk Class B quarterfinals. The Eagles host No. 4 Harborfields Tuesday in the semifinals.



19. (22) Manhasset (N.Y.), 13-4
The second-seeded Indians face third-seeded Wantagh in the Nassau County Class B semifinals Wednesday at Adelphi at 4 p.m.

20. (23) Garden City (N.Y.), 12-5
The top-seeded Trojans play fourth-seeded Long Beach in the Nassau County Class B semifinals Wednesday at Adelphi at 6 p.m.

21. (24) Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse, N.Y.), 15-1
The Brothers closed their regular season with easy wins over Homer (N.Y.), 20-2, and Skaneateles (N.Y.), 17-6.

22. (25) New Canaan (Conn.), 17-0
The Rams defeated Danbury, 20-10, in the FCAC quarterfinals. They played Darien in the semifinals on Monday.

23. (NR) Severna Park (Md.), 17-2
The Falcons advanced to the MPSSAA 4A/3A championship game by defeating Catonsville, 15-10. They play Westminster in the title game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at UMBC.

24. (5) Marriotts Ridge (Marriottsville, Md.), 17-1
The Mustangs were stunned by arch-rival Mt. Hebron, 10-8, in the third round of the 3A/2A Maryland state playoffs. The Mustangs were the District 5 champions.



25. (16) Sacred Heart Academy (Hempstead, N.Y.), 16-4
The Spartans reached the finals of the Catholic High School tournament, bowing to St. Anthony's, 19-12 on Monday. Maeve Quinn, Nina Corcoran and Becky Conto each had three goals in the loss.
