Basketball Recap: Cesar E. Chavez Takes a Loss

Cesar E. Chavez lost against Bellaire back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Cesar E. Chavez Lobos were outmatched by the Bellaire Cardinals and fell 67-12. While losing is never fun, the Lobos can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1525th, while the Cardinals are ranked 642nd).

Leading Bellaire to victory were Tyniah Smith and Lauren Burns. Smith almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine boards, while Burns went 7 for 16 on her way to 16 points in addition to seven steals and six assists. That's the most rebounds Smith has posted since back in February of 2024. Ava Gusman was another key player, putting up seven points and five assists.

Cesar E. Chavez has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-13 record this season. As for Bellaire, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-9.

Cesar E. Chavez has already played their next matchup, an 18-17 loss against Houston Math Science & Tech on the 29th. As for Bellaire, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 53-49 victory against Heights on the 28th.
