Football Game Preview: Southlake Carroll Dragons vs. DeSoto Eagles

The Southlake Carroll Dragons will face off against the DeSoto Eagles at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in Southlake Carroll's favor is that they have posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season.

Southlake Carroll is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. They claimed a resounding 51-19 victory over Guyer. Considering the Dragons have won 13 contests by more than 27 points this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Southlake Carroll had a senior duo take command as Davis Penn rushed for 161 yards and one TD while picking up 8.9 yards per carry and Angelo Renda threw for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 16 passes. The Dragons' leading receiver Brock Boyd was Renda's top target yet again, picking up 116 receiving yards and one score.

Southlake Carroll was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 276 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 241 rushing yards in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, DeSoto came tearing into Saturday's matchup with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 38.6 points), and they left with even more momentum. They took down the Wildkats 60-41. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked ninth, while the Wildkats are ranked 76th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Southlake Carroll's record now sits at 14-0. As for DeSoto, their record is now 11-3.

The upcoming contest will be a clash of competing strengths. Southlake Carroll has relied on air attacks this season and has averaged 306 passing yards per game. DeSoto, on the other hand, has relied on a stout run game: they average 271.1 rushing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Saturday? There's only one way to find out.

Southlake Carroll couldn't quite get it done against DeSoto when the teams last played back in December of 2023 as they fell 45-38. Can the Dragons avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
