Basketball Recap: Mardela Takes a Loss

Mardela was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 40-34 heartbreaker at the hands of the Pocomoke Warriors. Mardela lost against Pocomoke in their previous head to head back in February of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 64-28 score last time.

Pocomoke's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Donyae Washington led the charge by dropping a double-double on 18 points and 21 boards. Washington is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last 33 games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Danae Dennis, who posted eight points in addition to 12 boards and four steals.

Mardela's loss dropped their record down to 4-9. As for Pocomoke, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-7.

Mardela has already played their next contest (against Crisfield), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Pocomoke will be playing in front of their home fans against Wicomico at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Wicomico has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 177 points over their last three games.
