Volleyball Recap: Pace's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Tuesday

After flying high against Edcouch-Elsa on Saturday, Pace came back down to earth. The Vikings fell just short of the Lopez Lobos by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday. The Vikings' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Pace actually scored more points across those five sets (98-96), but sadly they still had to settle for second. The final score came out to 19-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-18, 15-8.

When it comes to explaining why Pace lost, don't look at Andrea Salgado. Despite the final result, she had 40 digs and four assists. Salgado has been hot for a while, having posted ten or more digs the last 13 times she's played. Megan Mares was another key player, getting 12 digs and one assist.

Leading Lopez to victory were Jasmine Cortinas and Chalene Granado. Cortinas had 31 kills, 30 digs, and two aces, while Granado had 50 assists and 25 digs. That's the most digs Cortinas has posted over her last seven matchups. Another player making a difference was Stephanie Ochoa, who had 20 digs.

Pace suffered their first road defeat, dropping their record down to 26-7. As for Lopez, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-8 record this season.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Pace is set to challenge their familiar foe Donna at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Lopez will take on rival Weslaco East at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
