Baseball Recap: Salamanca Warriors vs. Southwestern Trojans
Salamanca extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 6-7 in the process. They came up short against the Southwestern Trojans, falling 10-0. The shutout was out of character for the Warriors seeing as the last time the team failed to score was back in April.
As for Southwestern, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 7-6. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.
For Southwestern's part, Wilson Genareo was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. Genareo has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Southwestern's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-6 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Cooper Charles was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Gavin Anderson, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
Looking ahead, Salamanca will take on Olean at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Southwestern, they will challenge Jamestown at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
