Cedar Grove extended the longest winning streak in Super Essex - Colonial this week by beating Verona, 14-6. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Panthers.
Cedar Grove's dynamic duo of Joe Slattery and Paul Rufo proved tough for the Hillbillies to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Slattery threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns and Rufo had 194 yards receiving. David Njuko helped Cedar Grove's passing attack out by catching one ball for 38 yards.
Al Ports was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 103 yards on 22 carries as East Side defeated Verona. Teammate Elijah Gray added to the ground attack by rushing for eight yards.
Cedar Grove's Slattery and Rufo have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Slattery has thrown for 1062 yards this season, while Rufo, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 21 catches for 525 yards. Montclair Kimberley Academy's Rob Pannullo leads the league in rushing yards with 412.
A big matchup in Super Essex - Colonial this week will be when the Panthers take on the Blue Devils. At the moment, Cedar Grove is in first, while Central is in third.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Weequahic takes on the Hillbillies. The Indians have allowed 45 points this season, while Verona has given up 94.
The Bulldogs moved up to 99 from 133 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Shabazz climbed the ranks as a result of topping the Blue Devils 41-9.
