Bennett is 8-2 against Pocomoke since February of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Bennett Clippers will host the Pocomoke Warriors at 6:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Bennett has seven straight victories, Pocomoke has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court.
Last Tuesday, Bennett strolled past Crisfield with points to spare, taking the game 78-61. Given the Clippers' advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 70th, while the Crabbers are ranked 262nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Zakai Smullen continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, putting up 33 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Bennett's points. Another player making a difference was Jayden Colon, who posted 14 points.
Meanwhile, Pocomoke didn't have quite enough to beat Mardela on Tuesday and fell 64-62. Pocomoke was up 21-7 in the first quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.
Bennett will need focus on slowing down DESHOUR PRITCHETT, one of several Pocomoke players who made an impact when they last played. He dropped a double-double on 17 points and 12 boards. PRITCHETT has been hot, having posted nine or more rebounds the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of MALACHI BONNEVILLE, who went 7 of 10 on his way to 14 points along with six boards and three steals.
Even though they lost, Pocomoke smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in 20 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Bennett is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.0 points per game. As for Pocomoke, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-11.
Thursday's match will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Smullen and JAMIR ROBERTS. Smullen has been dynamite this season: he has averaged 23.8 points. For his part, ROBERTS has averaged 13.6 points, 4 steals, and 3.3 assists.
Bennett skirted past Pocomoke 79-76 in their previous matchup on Monday. Will Bennett repeat their success, or does Pocomoke have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
